The Town of Southbridge is located in Worcester County and has a population of 16,719. Southbridge gained a reputation for manufacturing optical products, so much so it gained the nickname “Eye of the Commonwealth.” During the industrial revolution, the area experienced rapid growth and created various neighborhoods including a historic downtown area as well as Victorian architecture. The area was initially inhabited by the Nipmuck and Mohegan tribes, with the Quinebaug River dividing their territories. As early as 1638, John Winthrop, Jr. purchased a tract for mining lead at what is now Leadmine Road in Sturbridge.
